A former University of Michigan student in the ROTC program was arrested on sex assault charges Tuesday, Aug. 15 when he returned from Taiwan to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Jimmy H. Nguyen, 36, was arraigned Wednesday in two cases on three counts of criminal sexual conduct related to sexual assaults reported off-campus while he was a student in 2012 and 2013.
At the time, crime alerts were issued by the university in and police revealed that they had identified a common suspect – described as a 31-year-old University of Michigan graduate student – in three incidents.
The alleged assaults were said to have occurred during parties at the man’s residence in the Zaragon Place Apartments, in the 600 block of East University Avenue, in fall 2012 and early spring 2013.
Three female students told police they drank alcohol and were subsequently assaulted, according to the alerts. Two reported being passed out and waking up during the assault and another reported being inappropriately grabbed.
Two of the three women were in the ROTC program with Nguyen and one of the three women did not wish to proceed with charges, Ann Arbor police Detective Lt. Matthew Lige said.
The cases against Nguyen indicate one incident, for which he is charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct for an incapacitated victim, occurred on Sept. 8, 2012 and another, for which he is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with multiple variables, occurred on Feb. 15, 2013.
